(More Recipes from a Kitchen Garden.)

2 c. flour

¾ c. sugar

½ tsp. baking soda

1 egg

½ tsp cinnamon

¼ c. chopped fresh cinnamon basil

¼ tsp. salt

½ c. finely chopped walnuts

¾ c. butter at room temperature

Topping:  3 T sugar, 2 tsp. cinnamon

Sift together the flour, baking soda, ½ tsp. cinnamon, and salt.  Set aside.  In a bowl cream the butter with ¾ c. sugar until light and fluffy.  Beat in the egg, mixing until combined.  Stir in cinnamon, basil, dry ingredients, and nuts, blending thoroughly.  Wrap and chill the dough for 1 hr. or until firm.  Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Shape the dough into 1-inch balls. Combine remaining 3 T. sugar and 2 tsp. cinnamon. Roll the balls of dough in this mixture until coated.  Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.  Press cookies down with the palm of hand to flatten them slightly.  Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden.  Transfer to racks to cool.  Makes about 5 doz.
